Railtoons wins Animation Jam 2015 on Newgrounds

Held in November 2015, the Sarcastic Animation Jam 2016 challenged animators around Newgrounds to write, develop and produce a complete animated short in 2 days using a number of preset prompts.

Out of the prompts ‘fishbowl’ and ‘broken window’ came Railtoons Animation’s entry Nothing Gold Can Stay, a heartbreaking short following the nihilistic life of a goldfish.

While a panel of judges deliberated, Newgrounds users were invited to rank their favourite entries for the Audience Choice Award, keeping in mind all entries were entirely developed in 2 days or less.

I’m thrilled to announce Nothing Gold Can Stay has picked up both the Audience Choice Award and Judges 1st Place, a solid achievement for such a rapidly produced animation.

Sneak Preview of ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’ (2015) PART 2

Here it is: Part 2 of the sneak preview of my upcoming film ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’. Final touches are being put on the 2D animated film before it is released early next year. For the last 6 months I’ve poured my energies into making this film, and honestly? It’s looking pretty sweet. I know, I know, you can barely contain your excitement. But to tide you over in the meantime, here are some more exclusive concept pictures and screenshots from the short film:

Shh, the Robot Wolf is watching… and scanning for puny humans to kill. Quick, pretend you don’t have a pulse.
The fabled silver ‘Woodsman’ axe was the only thing Red knew that could help her take down the Big Bad Robot Wolf. She just hoped she wouldn’t die trying.
When a girl meets a giant robot wolf, they look deeply into each others eyes… and fight to the death using magical electrified weapons. (My money’s on the wolf.)

Sneak Preview of ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’ (2015) PART 1

The 2D animation ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’ is just about completed. Final touches are being put on before it is released early next year. For the last 6 months I’ve poured my energies into making this film, and honestly? It’s looking pretty sweet. I know, I know, you can barely contain your excitement. But to tide you over in the meantime, here are some exclusive concept pictures and screenshots from the short film:

Red Riding Hood vs Giant Robot Wolf. Aw shit, I think Red’s in trouble.

Red hides a magical axe in her Granny’s grave. Because if you can think of a more kickass place to hide your secret deadly weapon, I’d like to hear it.

Stay tuned for PART TWO of the Little Red Robot Hunter sneak preview, coming tomorrow.

2D Animation: Avoid The Drama

Recently I completed a part-time 10 week internship at Brisbane animation company Explanimate. During my internship time I wrote, animated and composited this 2D animated short film about the Great Barrier Reef, which we lovingly dubbed ‘Avoid the Drama’. The guys at Explanimate must have been blown away by my spectacular scriptwriting efforts on this project, because since completing my internship I have taken on freelance scriptwriting and blog writing projects for the company. And it’s all thanks to a sick dolphin and some gossipy shrimp.

Little Red model sheet (from ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’)

Red character model sheet

Red Riding Hood was never a fairytale. It was a prophecy. Set in the near future, a young loner woman living in the woods must face off against a giant robot wolf with only her agility and courage. Oh yeah, and her mystical Woodsman axe.

This is ‘Little Red Robot Hunter’, my animated student film set for release (very) early 2015.

I wanted the character design for Red to have a slightly Disney-esque flavour, with a little more grunt. Any feedback is appreciated.

I had a lot of trouble nailing down a design for Wolf. Prior to starting this project I had essentially no experience drawing robots, so I spent many an hour looking at pictures of The Iron Giant, Terminator and Pacific Rim. I honestly have at least 7 pages of thumbnails sketches of robot wolf concepts from the pre-production stage, where I was trying to get a balance between cool robot detail, animation-friendly simplicity, and a lack of shitness due to my crappy robot drawing abilities. I like to think the designs got a little less shit each time. Any feedback on how I can improve my robot drawings in the future is appreciated.
